Alcaucín  -  general description

Do you love nature, hiking and tranquillity? Then Alcaucín is the perfect place for you.
The white village of Alcaucín is located on the edge of the natural park of the Sierras Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara and is a true hiker's paradise. There are countless hiking routes in the area, such as the one leading to the summit of La Maroma, the highest peak in La Axarquia at 2060 metres.
Alcaucin, like many of these white villages, is of Moorish origin. Nestled in rolling hills and surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and pine forests, this delightful village enchants with its narrow streets and flower-adorned white houses. Although only about 2800 people live here, the village offers everything you need for everyday life. There are small supermarkets, bakers, a medical centre, pharmacy and a primary school. A regular bus service and a very well-developed road connect the village with the coast.
Alcaucín also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine. Traditional dishes such as kid, pork loin with garlic, migas and stews can be found on the menus, to mention just a few of the specialities. Furthermore, fruits like oranges, lemons, mangos and avocados thrive here. High-quality extra virgin olive oil is also available here and is known under the name Aceite Puente Don Manuel. Another culinary highlight is the Fiesta de la Castaña, which takes place annually in November, where chestnuts roasted on a grill are offered for tasting.
Alcaucín is the perfect place for nature lovers, those seeking tranquillity and those who enjoy life.
It is a place not to be missed.
