El Acebuchal - general description
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the tranquillity and naturalness of a breathtaking landscape, but don't want to miss out on the proximity of the Mediterranean and civilisation - a little gem is waiting for you here.
El Acebuchal belongs to the municipality of Cómpeta and was nicknamed the "ghost village" for a long time. It is located in the natural park of the Sierras de Tejada, Almijara and Alahama, roughly halfway between the famous wine village of Còmpeta and the charming white village of Frigiliana.
The village currently consists of 33 houses. El Acebuchal is a place of tranquillity and closeness to nature. Two streets, a chapel, a restaurant and several rural accommodations offer the visitor idyllic insights into Andalusian life between the past and modernity. The surrounding area offers beautiful Mediterranean hiking trails, hidden spots for romantic picnics and not forgetting the proximity to the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean. El Acebuchal owes its name "ghost village" to the Spanish Civil War. Back then, all the inhabitants had to leave their homes and the village was abandoned to its fate. In 1998, the "ghost village" was brought back to life and has been an integral part of rural tourism ever since. The village is surrounded by mid-altitude peaks that are very popular with hikers. The highest peak in the area is the Cerro Lucero at an altitude of 1720 metres, whose unique silhouette forms a unique backdrop to the surrounding area. El Acebuchal is a very special place.
